U-20 players target places in Olympic squad
HOWARD WALKER With the U-20 REGGAE BOYZ @ THE CONCACAF WORLD CUP PLAY-OFFS IN MEXICO

Friday, March 01, 2013

PUEBLA, Mexico — After crashing out of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship Jamaica's head coach Luciano Gama says the work must continue if the current crop of players is going to make it to the Rio Olympics in 2016.
"What we hope for them is don't stop now, we must go for the qualification for the next Pan American Games and we hope (we get) some support in Jamaica to give to them to continue because this team is the team that will fight for a place in Rio in 2016," Gama told the Jamaica Observer.

He continued: "So we can't stop we must continue the work and we will have a chance of going to the Olympic Games in 2016."
Jamaica entered their quarter-final match knowing a win would propel them to the FIFA World Cup in Turkey between June 21 and July 13, but they crashed to an embarrassing 0-4 defeat in another poor display.
The fllodgates opened up when a powerful shot by Armando Zamorano from 30 metres was deflected by Alvas Powell and wrong-footed goalkeeper Rashaun Patterson in the 12th minute.
Marco Bueno doubled Mexico's advantage, nodding home in the 42nd minute from a right-sided cross from Francisco Flores, that Patterson should have left his line and claim easily.
Patterson, the former Camperdown High and St Jago High goalkeeper who dethroned Nico Campbell as the number one shot-stopper, then further allowed in two questionable goals from free-kicks. After setting a two-man wall that looked more like a rickety fence, Flores easily converted from 22 metres in the 67th minute.
Then Jesus Escoboza saw his right sided freekick eluding Patterson in the 75th minute as Mexico qualified in style.
Jamaica offered little for the second consecutive match, and in just three games, they conceded nine goals while scoring four times.
On their opening match, Jamaica were convincing in their 4-1 defeat of Puerto Rico, before a 4-0 meltdown to group winners Panama.
But Gama saw positives from the last game and thought the Boyz performed well despite the margin of loss.
"I think today was very positive... they fought a very strong team. They followed the game plan, they followed everything that we planned before," said Gama.
"We gave up some goals in set pieces, but the reality is that the Mexican team is such a good team... the base (of which came) from the Under-17 World Championship," he noted.
"Everybody knows that it would be very difficult (as) Mexico is a professional team with all the structures and all the facilities. I think the team today (Wednesday) was very brave, we are proud of them," he added.

I could never have been prouder of a young team than I was of my team yesterday.

We went to Puebla missing several key players and by the time we got to the yesterday's finals against Mexico we were at around 50% of our full strength team.

And by overtime in yesterday's finals against a full strength Mexican team, with who knows how many thousands of screaming Mexican fans, my team was totally winded, exhausted and completely fatigued.

By yesterday's overtime period the young men were going on pure emotion and adrenaline. Most of the guys legs were completely dead.

As I said ealier, I only wished we had our full strength team with all the guys who were either injured or who weren't released by their club teams.

At full strength we are easily the best U20 team in CONCACAF, although my team is regularly described as garbage and a bunch of $hit.

One love..........

Isn't it funny that Mexico's goalkeeper Richard Sanchez, rated the best goalkeeper of the tournament is a young man from LA, California that 2 years ago couldn't be our US U17 starting goalkeeper, switched to Mexico and still wouldn't be our U20 starting goalkeeper this year, but still yet is rated the best U20 goalkeeper.

Testament to the higher quality of coaching in Mexico? At least he looks young, unlike the US goalie who looked much older than 20 in face and build......

I know you are just poking fun when you're suggesting that yesterday's finals was played between two Mexican teams.

You know the USSF, Tab Ramos and his coaching staff wouldn't be tracking, investing in, and preparing a bunch of kids some from as early as 9 or 10 year old for the kids to be part of a Mexican team.

As I have said before, it's the other way around with American kids playing on both teams. There no player on the US team that was born anywhere in Mexico.

Did you know that a few years ago you had to be born in Mexico to play on any Mexican national team.

Another trend that I have heard about, is the number of cases of various academy kids getting calls from agents for several Central and South American countries telling them about some grandmother or grandfather or some other relative thats makes them eligible to switch from the USA program and play for this country or that country.

Recruiting an adult player is one thing, but pestering a 15 or 16 year old kid I think, is taking it a little bit too far.

Richard Sanchéz is too shaky, I guess Mexican coaches had stuck with him just due to his height... but dude's not that good.

Mexico's NT is based on Mexican law, Mexicans are Mexicans by ius sanguinis, so it had always been open to US born guys, they were simply not good enough. Still now, noone has been on our senior team for more than 1 or 2 caps.

And many of those US born guys who had played in our youth teams have been playing their trade in Mexican clubs as well, the only exception is Sanchez, but thanks to the Mexican NT he was in Atletico de Madrid... sadly he couldn't cope with taking classes in Spanish and decided to get back to Dallas...

He struggles with classes in both Spanish and/or English, let us see if Sanchez can earn any 1st team playing team after the U20 world cup.

Both teams, USA and Mexico can finish in top 8 U20 teams at the U20 world cup.

Well, the sons of Mexican inmigrants and the Mexican kids that grow there in the US usually have a "decent (arguably)" Spanish, but just in the spoken regard... they can't cope with the rules and grammar of formal Spanish (specially writen). I can't comment about their English proficiency.

I have cousins born in Mexico but that are in the US since kids, when we're chatting I preffer to keep in English better, their writen Spanish is awful.

I fully understand that, I can read and speak good/excellent Portuguese and Spanish but my writing is very poor.
