He has the ability to be the future of our attack and the best forward in the MLS. I believe he can go on to be a premier league force in the future but discipline is something he needs to add to his game or his lack of it will hold him back. Hes young and has plenty time to learn but im worried about him playing for us in important WCQ games right now. Hes good enough right now but we need 11 on the pitch at all times and can we trust him ?

I understand him being frustrated because from what ive seen of him this season, he should be 1 of the managers 1st names on the team sheet but Mattocks needs to prove his point by working hard, continuing to learn and coming off the bench and scoring because coming off the bench and getting red cards is making things alot more difficult.

F**k Vancouver, Mattocks come to Arsenal and be an impact striker from the bench

Mattocks "indiscipline" might just get him a contract in England. It work for Blacka Pearl, Fuller, Nandi Lowe, Jermaine Johnson, not to mention hooligan like Marlon King and Joey Barton.

You both might be right...Maybe England is better place for him. The league now knows about his temperment, so players will try to push his buttons to get him out the game. He must watch out for that.

Whitecaps might appeal Mattocks’ ban
Today, August 29, 2012, 12 hours ago | Marc Weber
The Vancouver Whitecaps are considering an appeal of Darren Mattocks’ red card and automatic one-game ban from Saturday’s 2-1 loss at the Portland Timbers.

After coming on as a substitute, Mattocks was ejected in the 84th minute for an apparent elbow to the face of defender David Horst.

It was an odd, drawn-out sending off, with referee David Gantar consulting with his linesman for considerable time, and fumbling through his pockets for the right card. A replay also showed on the big screen during the delay, which Gantar appeared to glance at.

None of that might be relevant in an appeal, but the video evidence available appears to show Mattocks’ left arm and elbow missing, or perhaps glancing across, Horst’s face. The ball then struck Horst’s arm and maybe grazed his face, too, and Horst certainly reacts like he’s been clocked by Mattocks’ elbow.

It was certainly a careless play from Mattocks, and you can understand the case for it being deemed reckless. He didn’t need to get his arm up so high. There’s also a swinging motion and, from the angle the linesman would have seen, it does look worse.

But it seems hard to say there was “excessive force” if, in fact, there was no contact.

As for the appeal, the Whitecaps technically had 24 hours after the game to decide on that, but sources indicate that with this being the first year of these new disciplinary guidelines, there is some leeway.

The Whitecaps will have to weigh the benefit of an appeal decision — rescinding the red card — against some stiff penalties should it go south.

Prior to the start of the season, each MLS club posted a $25,000 refundable bond with the league office for the right to make up to two unsuccessful appeals. If an appeal is upheld, the red card is gone. If it’s rejected, the card stands and the appeal slot is gone.

But, here’s the kicker, if an appeal is deemed “frivolous by the independent panel reviewing the case,” then the $25,000 is forfeited, the club loses any further appeals in that season and the next, and, the suspension doubles.

An appeal is not frivolous “if a reasonable observer with knowledge of the Laws of the Game would find that there is a rational basis for arguing that the red card should not have been issued.”

The complete MLS red card appeal rules are explained here.

If the panel’s decision isn’t unanimous, then the sanction will stand.

The Whitecaps are in L.A. on Saturday to face the Galaxy. For a team that’s struggling to score goals, having their seven-goal man available would be a big boost.

Vancouver (10-10-7) has lost three straight and five in a row on the road. They can, however, move into a tie with fourth-place L.A. (12-11-4) on points with a win at the Home Depot Center.

The red card was unjust and I hope the red card will be rescinded.

Mattocks just need fi go back to his aggressive nature in front of the goal and don't pay attention to all the unjust calls that are made against him by the referees in MLS. NO DEFENDER IN MLS can stop him. He prove that over and over. All these calls against the youth, might be in the back of his mind. My advice to the Mattocks, aka the answer, and Drogba is play with the same unstoppable nature you've been playing with since high school, college days and young MLS career... the same unstoppable mindset that make you the one of the most feared striker in high school, college and MLS. Go do your thing, youth.. 4 goals is nothing for you to get with the reminder of the MLS regular season. Being starter or off the bench, you prove you can put the ball in back of the net either way.

24 Under 24: Mattocks confident he'll set rookie record
September 21, 2012

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Every now and again, a player comes along that compels even the stodgiest of supporters to get up off his seat.

In Vancouver, that player has arrived. His name is Darren Mattocks, the No. 1-ranked player in MLSsoccer.com's third annual 24 Under 24.

And even though he’s not the finished article just yet, you’d be hard pressed to find a regular follower of Major League Soccer who doesn’t know who Mattocks is despite the fact he’s only started 12 games for the Vancouver Whitecaps in league play.

As for MLS defenders? They all know him now.

24 Under 24: Mattocks is the No. 1-ranked young player in MLS

Combining electric pace, an incredible ability to leap and an unshakeable swagger, the 22-year-old Jamaican has become the focal point of many a pregame defensive tactical session of opposing teams.

Mattocks’ impressive debut season has surprised some, but not the coach who drafted him.

WATCH: Mattocks' classy finish vs. Colorado

“We watched him in college, and he has all the attributes to be a top player," Vancouver manager Martin Rennie said. “I rate him very highly.”

And for good reason.

Seven goals from a dozen starts over 17 matches is a haul most strikers would take. It’s an even more impressive statistic when considering that he missed eight games early in the year due to a burn injury.

That cooking accident, which left Mattocks in the hospital, would have been a perfect excuse for a slow start upon his return, especially given he wasn’t able to train properly during his rehabilitation due to in his inability to sweat correctly because of the severely burned right arm and shoulder area.

Instead, the pacy forward scored six goals in his first eight league matches back – in what were essentially his first MLS minutes (Mattocks played one minute in the season opener for what was technically his debut before the injury).

WATCH: Epic "Air Mattocks" goal vs. Toronto

However, he’s only got one goal in his last eight, so there will naturally be questions about whether defenses have been able to figure out how to deal with Mattocks.

The man himself has no such doubts.

“I think there was one point when I went three games without a goal back in my freshman season,” Mattocks told MLSsoccer.com on Monday, referring to his time with the University of Akron. “The key for me to get back on the scoring sheet and being consistent from this point forward is to keep working hard.

“Since I’m back off suspension, I have no national duty for a while," continued the Jamaican international. "I think the team has finally gelled together in Vancouver, so now hopefully that can all be positive for me to get back scoring.”

Speaking of national team duty, Mattocks is hoping to draw upon his most recent run with Jamaica, in which he played 26 minutes as a substitute in his country’s famous 2-1 victory against the United States in Kingston on September 7.

Not bad for his second-ever cap.

“Obviously a World Cup qualifier is a very big occasion – it’s a very high-pressure game,” Mattocks said. “If we were down 1-0 in the first half or at halftime, I thought I’d get a shot. But we were up 2-1 in the second half and I came in around the 60th minute and did well.

“For me, it doesn’t really matter what age, but I want to be the starting striker for Jamaica. Whatever it takes, I’m willing to do.”

Still, as it seems with any precocious talent, there has been another side to Mattocks’ game that has made the headlines. Despite only playing 1,074 MLS minutes this season, he’s managed to pick up two red cards and seven yellows.

Some have hinted that it’s a dark side to his game, while others have suggested it’s mere clumsiness when it comes to the art of tackling and challenging for the ball.

WATCH: Mattocks is No. 1 in 24 Under 24

“I think some of the decisions which led to those sendings-off were unfortunate, especially the red card he received against [the Portland Timbers on August 25], but there are lessons to be learned,” Rennie said. “Ultimately, he needs to be on the field to score goals.”

Mattocks said in all of his time playing organized soccer, he’s only picked up one red card and three yellows before his time in MLS.

So perhaps it’s just a strange aberration rather than a sign of discipline issues.

One thing Vancouver will certainly be hoping is such an aberration is the recent mini-dry spell the lanky forward is going through, with just one goal in his last eight. But in typical fashion, Mattocks is confident this upcoming four-match home spell against the Colorado Rapids, the Seattle Sounders, Chivas USA and the Portland Timbers will be a chance to score bags full of goals.

Rennie has already announced that Mattocks will start against the Rapids on Saturday vs. Colorado (7:30 pm ET, watch LIVE online).

“That’s how it goes sometimes – the best players in the world have times where they’re really hot or they’re really cold,” Mattocks said. “Hopefully with four home games in a row, for me, I should be getting four or five goals coming up.”

If Mattocks' prediction is right, not only would he become the highest-scoring rookie in MLS history (Damani Ralph scored 11 in 2003), but the Whitecaps, who are one of only three clubs with fewer than 30 goals scored this season, will be well-positioned to become the first Canadian team to qualify for an MLS postseason.

There may be just five matches left in 2012, but Mattocks and the Whitecaps are far from done.

Martin MacMahon covers the Vancouver Whitecaps for MLSsoccer.com.

Beat out Freddi Adu, Sapong, all the other young players in MLS for the top honor of being the #1 in the under 24 bracket. The young man, real inspiration to his peers back in Jamaica. So proud of the youth. Keep working hard and do your ting.

He did too much tinkering from day one. After leading the team in scoring during the pre-season him lef Mattocks pon di bench fi start di season. Only after a few big performances off the bench he made him a starter. Seems like he was just looking for an excuse to put him bach on the bench even after di yute prove he's the best goalscorer on the team. Tappa seem to be doing the same nonsense.
