SALUTE
TO "REGGAE BOYZ" PLANNED IN MIAMI
Jan 15,
Preparations are underway as thousands of Jamaican and
Caribbean
residents in South Florida get ready to welcome Jamaica's
national soccer
team, "The Reggae Boyz" with a stirring
pep-rally and fundraiser in Miami on
Sunday, February 1, at the AT&T Amphitheater, in
Bayfront Park.
Billed as "South Florida's Salute To "The
Reggae Boyz", the event -which is
being coordinated by Jamaica Awareness and Caribbean
Rhythms, Inc., -will
feature a number of Florida-based reggae and soca
entertainers, along with
top international reggae stars, who will appear as guest
performers, before
an anticipated crowd of thousands. A number of local
civic and political
officials, led by Jamaica's Consul General, Mr. John
Atkins, will also be on
hand to officially declare the day "Reggae Boyz
Day" and present the team
with the keys to their various cities along with other
commendations. The
team recently made history as the first soccer team from
the English
speaking Caribbean to qualify for the World Cup
competition.
"We are delighted to be able to show our support for
the team here in
Florida." Commented Pat Montague, Jamaica's
Information Officer in Miami
and a member of the organizing team. "A number of us
were not able to
enjoy the real spirit of the team's achievements, and
this gives us an
opportunity to show our support and be a part of the
excitement." She
concluded. The event will take place just a couple days
before the "Reggae
Boyz" tackle World Cup champions Brazil in the
Orange Bowl on Feb. 3 and
will serve as a big pre-game celebration. It is
anticipated that a number of
supporters will travel from other U.S. cities to show
their support for the
team. A strong contingent from Jamaica is also expected
to be in Florida for
the salute.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) will benefit from
the proceeds -Ten
Dollars admission is being charged, children under 12
free -which will assist
the team cover expenses as they prepare to make the trip
to France for the
World Cup soccer competition in July. This is one of the
few events in Miami
that the team will make a public appearance before the
match, and the
event has the full sanction of the JFF.
The entire Caribbean community is supportive of the
Jamaican team and this
will be evident through the carnival-like atmosphere that
will engulf the
amphitheater as vendors sell spicy Caribbean dishes,
quenching juices,
colourful T-Shirts, caps and other accessories promoting
"The Reggae Boyz".
It promises to be a day of fun and unity not to be
missed.
