JFF SUSPENDS NATIONAL FOOTBALL PROGRAM
July 7
Horace Burrell, head of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has suspended immediately all its national programs due to lack of funds. Burrell hinted that a recent 65 per cent cut from the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) has led to its financial "crisis", and it's decision to suspend all programs. The women's team, preparing at GC Foster for their World Cup qualifiers on July 13 and July 23, and the senior men's team preparing for the tour to England later this month are being sent home until further notice. Earlier this year, the Sports Development Foundation announced it's reduction in funds to the Federation leading to a 65 per cent cut and the departure of two members of the coaching staff - goalkeeper coach, Paul Campbell, and Brazilian fitness trainer, Glydistan Ananias. The Burrell administration claims that the JFF has made great efforts to secure adequate financing for its national programs including seeking additional sponsorship, asking the government to reinstate the monthly subvention from the Sports Development Foundation, but was unsuccessful in their efforts. Along with the women's team, there are three other teams presently in training for various international competitions. The Under-20s start their qualifying campaign this month for the 2003 World Youth Cup, while the Under-17s start theirs in October for the World Cup finals to be staged next year. The senior team was preparing for a series of qualifying matches for the Gold Cup tournament in November. At this time it is not know how it will affect the National Premier League. Members of thereggaeboyz.com forum blames gross mismanagement by the JFF for the current situation.

WHITMORE TO FACE MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
June 26
Trelawny's Coroner's Court has ruled that national footballer Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore be charged with manslaughter, in the death of former "Reggae Boyz" Stephen 'Shorty' Malcolm. Malcolm died on the night of January 28, 2001 when the Toyota car in which he was traveling with Whitmore and Charles Ewan overturned. Initial reports conflicted as to who was the driver of the car but following an investigation it was determined that Whitmore was at the wheel at the time of the accident. The Inquest, which began on April 23 saw a total of ten witnesses who gave evidence. Whitmore's Attorney, Walter Scott said he was not surprised at the ruling, and that the result of the impending trial was what mattered. Scott would also arrange for the appearance of Whitmore for formal charges.

RICKETTS GAINS SUPPORT
June 8
Leyton Orient is gaining support in attempts to sign Jamaican international Donovan Ricketts. An appeal for a work permit for the 24-year-old goalkeeper was launched following the rejection of the initial application. There is a new request by MP Harry Cohen to Lord Rooker, the Minister of State, requesting that the new application be looked on more favourably. "I am strongly supportive of my local constituency football club signing Donovan Ricketts in order for him to play next season, Mr Cohen wrote. "He only just fails eligibility for an automatic work permit but I think that this, and permission to be allowed to stay in this country to play in the league, should be granted. It was also mentioned that because of the large Caribbean community in Leyton, Ricketts could be a positive role model for some of the local ethnic Caribbean youngsters. "He is a player with considerable international experience and it is exceptional for a third division club to obtain a player of such quality, Ricketts has made over 30 appearances for Jamaica and was part of their 1998 World Cup squad. He currently plays for Village United in Jamaica and was on trial at Orient at the end of last season.
