Jamaica
rout St. Lucia 4-0 in Digicel Cup
Sept. 28, 2006
Jamaica opened their defense of the Digicel Cup
with an unconvincing 4-0 win over St Lucia at
the National Stadium last night.
Comprised mostly of local-based players, The Reggae
Boyz got goals from Kevin Lamey, Wilfred Smith
and Demar Phillips to take joint leadership of
Group B with Haiti on three points.
In
a scrappy performance against a very weak St.
Lucia team, Jamaica scored all the goals in the
first half and looked lost for ideas in the second.
Seba's Wilfred Smith got the Boyz off to a good
start in the third minute when he scored from
inside the box after goalie Giovanni Veterville
failed to hold onto a Fabian Davis left-footer.
In the 22nd minute Kevin Lamey got his long awaited
international goal when he buried a pass from
Waterhouse club mate Demar Phillip. Eight minutes
later Phillips got the third when he scored a
header from a left-sided corner. Lamey completed
his brace by scoring again six minutes later.
In the curtain-raiser, a hot Haitian team crushed
St. Vincent and the Grenadines 4-0 with goals
from Josue Mayard. Jean Baptiste Fritzson, Jean
Jascques and Herold Gracien.
The
competition continues tomorrow at the same venue
with Haiti vs St Lucia at 5:00 pm and Jamaica
vs SVG at 7:00. Read

time that Jamaica will be playing at the "Office"
in over 20 months.
The
team will be made up mainly of local based players

with the strikers at his disposal and will have

for the game.

The Reggae Boyz went down 0-1 against Canada in
an international friendly played at Montreal's
Claude Robillard Stadium. A goal in the 41st minute
by Rob Friend gave Canada the edge in a game that
both teams could make valid claims for victory.
The
Reggae Boyz, playing without many of their top
players made a number of mistakes in the first
half. In the 38th minute, Friend had to be helped
from the field after coming up on a hard tackle
from defender Damion Stewart at the edge of the
penalty area. Stewart was cautioned by the Costa
Rican referee Walter Quesaba on the play. Minutes
later, Friend headed a lobbed ball from midfielder
Julian de Guzman over a stranded Shawn Sawyers
and into the Jamaican goal.
Jamaica
played a much better second half especially with
the introduction in the 64th minute of Omar Daley
and Dawkins replacing Demar Phillips and Kevin
Lamey. Daley along with Cambell-Ryce played some
good combinations and in the 68th minute the Reggae
Boyz were unlucky not to have the equalizer. Teafore
Bennett was unfairly judged to be offside after
scoring a rebound off goalkeeper Greg Sutton.
The
game was watched by 6,500 mostly pro-Canadian
with a small but vocal group of Reggae Boyz supporters.
Both teams will meet in a return match in Kingston,
Jamaica on Oct. 8. More

Players unavailable for Jamaica vs Canada friendly
August 30, 2006
Interim Coach Carl Brown has faced a tough challenge
naming his squad for the Reggae Boyz friendly
international against Canada at the Complexe Sportif
Claude Robillard in Montreal on September 4. Brown's
main problem in assembling the team is that a
number of first choice players are carrying injures
or unavailable due to club commitments. Regular
captain for the Reggae Boyz, Donovan Ricketts,
Jermaine Johnson and Shavar Thomas are the latest
players that have asked to be excluded from the
upcoming international friendly.
Included
in his squad are Veteran Waterhouse striker Kevin
Lamey who has earned the recall after scoring
a season-high 22 goals. In addition, bringing
an international mix to the team are two England-based
players - Ricardo Fuller, Damion Stewart - two
Sweden-based players Teafore Bennett and Khari
Stephenson, and from the United States "A"
league are Omar Daley, Fabian Dawkins and Shane
Crawford. The local based players invited are
Shawn Sawyers, Richard McCallum, Demar Phillips,
Desmond Breakenridge, Fabian Davis, Lovel Palmer,
Jermaine Taylor, Jason Morrison, Oneil Thompson,
Tyrone Sawyers and newcomer Xavean Virgo. These
players will start training at Boys' Town's Collie
Smith Drive field beginning at 4:00 p.m. everyday.

Brown
back in charge of the Reggae Boyz August 17, 2006
Carl Brown, the Former technical director of Jamaica's
football program, was yesterday named by the Jamaica
Football Federation (JFF) as the new interim head
coach of the senior Reggae Boyz team. The announcement
was made by JFF head Crenston Boxhill at a hastily
arranged press conference staged at the JFF's
headquarters. This is the fifth time that Brown
is being appointed as national coach of Jamaica.
Former
head coach Wendell Downswell resigned last Tuesday,
after a series of poor results with the Reggae
Boyz. Boxhill however was quick to explain that
Brown's appointment was temporary and done as
a matter of expediency, as the JFF negotiates
with an experienced international coach to help
the teams 'Back to Africa 2010' World Cup campaign".
Brown
has had some success as national head coach in
1990-94, winning the Caribbean Cup in 1991 along
with guiding Jamaica to third place in the CONCACAF
Gold Cup in 1993. He has assisted three Brazilians
coaches, Rene Simoes, Clovis de Oliveira and Sebastiao
Lazaroni (twice) since 1994. In 1998, Brown guided
an under-strength Jamaica team to the Shell Cup
title.
The
Reggae Boyz scheduled to play Canada in a two-game
friendly series on September 4 in Canada and October
8 at home, and Peru on November 15 in Jamaica.

Hello reggaez!
I´m from Helsingborg in Sweden, where your
internationel striker Luton Shelton plays. He
has been a massive hit and success here even though
he got some injury problems and missed a couple
of matches. We all are impressed over his speed,
he is the fastest in the swedish league, no doubt!
He is a big favourite at Olympia, our arena, not
suprising thinking of what playingstyle he got;
quick, technical, good header and more. The only

Boxhill
to Upgrade Technical Staff
The President of the Jamaica Football Federation
(JFF) Crenston Boxhil,l in an address at the Wray
& Nephew NPL Awards Ceremony stated that he
was extremely disappointed with the nation's recent
result on the international stage.
Boxhill
noted that the main priority of his administration
is to upgrade the technical staff with a more
qualified international coach and asked for all
sectors of the Jamaican community to get involved
in helping the process. By overhauling the present
technical department he is hoping that Jamaica
will be able to move past the regional CONCACCAF
level in major tournaments.
It
is also the intention of the JFF to have the national
senior team play an international match once a
month and they plan to implement this with the
help of a new technical director who could be
named in a matter of weeks. The first of such
games will be on September 4 against Canada in
Toronto. A return match will be played on October
8 at the National Stadium followed by another
home match against Peru on November 15. The senior
Reggae Boyz team will defend their regional title,
the Digicel Caribbean Cup, with one round being
played in Jamaica at the end of September. More

Reggae
Boyz Suffer Big Loss to England
June 3, 2006
Jamaica's Reggae Boyz lost 6-0 to England in an
historic friendly international at Manchester
United's Old Trafford stadium. A crowd of over
70 thousand watched in a party atmosphere as England
capitalized on poor defending to win their final
warm-up game before the World Cup Finals in Germany.
Jamaica, coming off a 4-1 loss to Ghana was also
weakened by the loss of striker Marlon King for
a breach of discipline. Although outclassed, The
Boyz seemed motivated and tried to put on a good
show before the large crowd.
In the first five minutes, the Reggae Boyz launched
a series of fast paced attacks that put England
on the defensive. England quickly settled and
started to dominate possession. Eleven minutes
into the game England struck first blow when Crouch
heads down to Owen who steers the ball on for
Lampard to score. The Reggae Boyz continued to
concede goals giving up two own goals. David Beckham's
free-kick was deflected into the net by Jermaine
Taylor in the 17th and Crouch adding the third
in the 29th off an Omar Delay's deflection. Jamaica's
best chance of the half came from Jason Euell,
whose powerful shot forced goalkeeper Paul Robinson
to parry it wide. Jamaica's defense was again
caught off guard as Michael Owen broke loose from
a Rio Ferdinand long ball, and rounding goalkeeper
Donovan Ricketts, rolled the ball into an empty
net to end the half 4-0.
Crouch
scored his second goal in the 67th minute and
completed his hat scoring an Owen's cross from
the edge of the box in the 89th minute. Although
outplayed for most of the match, Jamaica created
a few chances of their own in the second half.
Ricardo Fuller, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Jermaine
Hue and Luton Shelton all had outstanding moments
in the game. The 6-0 score line is England's best
result under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

May

Jamaica's senior Reggae Boyz team lost the first
of a two-match tour of England today when they
went down 4-1 to Ghana at Leicester City's Walkers
stadium. Ghana, winners of four African Cup of
Nations titles proved too strong for the Reggae
Boyz scoring two goals in the first half and two
in the second half for a convincing win. Ghana
took an early lead after just five minutes as
Sulley Muntari pounced on a rebound and put it
pass Ricketts in Jamaica's goal. Ghana continued
to pressure and doubled their lead on 19 minutes
as Damion Stewart deflected a Stephen Appiah's
shot into his own goal.
Jamaica
rallied gamely in the second half and just before
the hour mark Jason Euell pulled a goal back for
the Boyz, scoring a rebound from a Shane Crawford
free kick. Ghana took back their two-goal cushion
with Appiah finding the net on 66 minutes and
again two minutes later with Matthew Amoah scoring

Hold USA to 1-1 Tie
April 12, 2006
Jamaica's Reggae Boyz put their CONCACAF rivals
USA to the test as both teams played to an exciting
1-1 draw in a friendly international at the SAS
Soccer Park, Cary, North Carolina.
The
Boyz struck in the fourth minute courtesy of a
Jermaine Hue's pass to Teofore Bennett who outpaced
the USA defenders and calmly slotted home pass
Tony Meola in goal. Team immediately USA stepped
up the pace with some positive runs forward only
to be kept at bay by a solid looking Reggae Boyz
defense.
The
USA finally broke through in the 25th minute as
Ben Olsen collected a quick Landon Donovan's pass
in the goal area and a struck a low shot under
the an out stretched Ricketts into the net.
The Boyz countered well at times and in the 31st
minute, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, showed good pace
and skill down right side, twisting Chris Albright
around before crossing to Ryan Johnson in the
centre, but the latter's shot was blocked.
Early
in the second half, Donovan Ricketts pulled off
a spectacular one-handed save, tipping Chris Albright's
close-range header over the cross bar. The game
seemed to lose momentum as both teams made substitutions
midway in the half. USA pressed for the winner
late in the game but the Reggae Boyz maintained
their composure for a well deserved 1-1 draw.
The U.S. is now 9-0-8 against Jamaica.

Fuller
Scores Goal and Red Card
March
19, 2006
Jamaican International Ricardo Fuller had mixed
fortunes in Ipswich's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace
on Saturday at Selhurst Park. Fuller scored a
superb header midway into the second half to give
Ispwich the equalizer, but then received a red
card 12 minutes from the end for a alleged rude
gesture to an assistant referee. Earlier in the
game, Fuller unleashed a 30 yard strike but his
shot went straight to Palace's keeper Gabor Kiraly.
Fuller continued to press for a goal but was again
denied by the keeper on the edge of the penalty
area. The Reggae Boyz striker who is on a one
month loan from Southampton, may have played his
last game for Ipswich as he will miss next week's
home game against Hull City due to his red card.
Fuller has scored 2 goals in the last three games
he has played while on loan. Ipswich Town's manager
Joy Royle, has openly expressed his desire to
keep Fuller at Ipswich who are in 10th place with
7 games to go. Read

in him as a person and a professional football

Boxhill
Survives No-Confidence Vote
Jan. 15 Senior Analyst - Forum Member
After a day of high drama and comical excitement,
the Crenston Boxhill led team retained control
of the Jamaica Football Federation, surviving
a vote of no confidence. The total number of JFF
delegates in attendance at Munro College in St
Elizabeth was 104. Of those, 51 voted against
the no confidence motion and 53 voted in favor
of it. For the no confidence motion to have been
achieved at least 2/3 of the delegates needed
to vote in favor of the motion.
The
news team on the ground stated that it was a most
disgraceful affair. Quite a few delegates attended
the meeting with only one item on their agenda
To get rid of Boxhill. Others
have two, run Boxhill and fire Gibson.
Many were in agreement that the behavior displayed
by the anti Boxhill section of the crowd was embarrassingly
disgraceful. The scene was so bad, somebody commented
bwoy this feel like the 70's, communism
vs capitalism. In fact some argue that this may
have contributed to the middle of the road delegates
backing away from supporting the motion.
Well,
it is over for now, and many will argue
that it is the right decision. The Captain and
crew seemed too anxious for power and moreover
it is only right for Boxhill to complete his tour
of duty. Now Boxhill knows there is no time for
posturing, if he doesnt get up and represent,
he will be history come the next election. Read

The Reggae Boyz to to regain some of the credibility

INVITED GUESTS (Colonel Ken Barnes, father of

May I extend a special welcome to you all and
my personal appreciation to you for joining us
this morning.
Jamaicas
national senior team popularly known as the reggae
Boyz have moved up approximately ten places in
the FIFA world rankings over the past two years.
As
we all know these rankings are highly influenced
by the games played by respective teams and importantly
by the results.
In
this context I am reminded that since November
2004 this team has played eighteen (18) games,
won eleven (11), drawn four (4) and lost three
(3). The games lost were to the USA, Mexico and
Australia.
Our
relatively young team with a bias towards locally
grown talent, having won the Caribbean Digicel
cup in February 2005 reached the quarterfinals
in the gold cup in the summer of 2005.
No
doubt as a result of this performance over the
last five months the federation has been approached
by no less than seven highly respected teams for
matches against our senior team.
In
short, ladies and gentlemen, our senior team is
indeed marketable and respected on the international
football circuit
The
current administration of the federation has always
been cognisant of the role international friendly
matches play in building our football product
and indeed the brand Jamaica.
We
are even more cognisant of this based on the fact
that since November 2004 we are building a relatively
young team. In this scenario exposure at the international
level takes on supreme importance.
Every
single sponsor who the federation has approached
for major sponsorship over the next two years
can testify to the fact that a critical component
of all our submissions have been requests for
support for international camps and international
matches.
Let
me say categorically that despite the healthy
movement in our rankings we have no illusions
about where we are, where we need to go and how
we need to get there.
We
have conquered the Caribbean at the senior, the
youth and the womens levels. But, ladies and gentlemen
our reality is that we are a region within a region
and hence the greater outpost is CONCACAF, where
the traditional power houses like the Canadians,
the U.S.A., Mexico, Costa Rica and Honduras roam.
Our
search for international matches therefore is
driven first and foremost by our recognition that
our young, talented emerging team needs the exposure
at the international level. They need to play
against higher ranked teams, to play in countries
of varying climatic conditions, on all types of
surfaces, and against physically bigger opponents.
If
we are to make that transition outside of our
Caribbean dominance there can be no limit to the
quality and quantity of the exposure. I would
venture to add therefore, that in this process
the results may be mixed.
Ladies
and gentlemen, I stress this because we have long
gone past the recognition of the natural talent
and skill that our players
Have.
This is and what has made our brand attractive.
We are now at the point where the talent must
and can only be strengthened by the rough and
tough of international games and camps.
Through
the combination of transitional programmes for
our under thirteens and up and a rapid increase
in the international exposure of our senior teams
we are sure to have a sustainable product.
The
federation hopes that as we begin to prepare our
senior team for south Africa 2010, our under 23s
for CAC and Olympics this year, our under seventeens
for south Korea in 2007, that our sponsors will
understand when we ask for this sometimes expensive
component in our overtures to them.
It
is with this as a background that it is over two
years ago, (yes two years) that vice-president
Evans, and myself met with the chairman of the
English football association to discuss the possibility
of a friendly international between Jamaica and
England. Such an encounter we knew from then would
give excellent exposure to our team, would stimulate
age-old passions and would arouse friendly intense
rivalry.
It
therefore is with the greatest sense of pride,
literally two years later that we are here today
to formally announce that the Jamaica football
federation has reached agreement and has signed
a contract with the English football association
for Jamaica to play England in a landmark friendly
international at the new Wembley stadium on June
3, 2006 at 10 a.m Jamaica time
The
game will be Englands last match prior to
the 2006 world cup finals in Germany and will
be the first time the two nations have met on
the football field. As per contract both teams
have committed to play their best available players.
I
can stress further that when the federation specifically
asked about utilising the images of Beckham, Rooney
and others in our promotions this was unreservedly
agreed to. Need I say more about the likely line
up?
Maybe
I do . So let us paint this picture
together.
Picture
the brand new 90,000 seats stadium described as
the worlds largest fully-covered football
stadium, acoustically tuned to create a fantastic
atmosphere ..
Picture
10, 000 seats allocated to Jamaican fans, how
are they dressed? Are we seeing the colours?
We
are hearing the FIFA anthem visualise with me
Beckham, Rooney, a fit Owen, walking alongside ..
(coach forgive me but we must be allowed in these
circumstances to impose a little) ..imagine
gardener, king, fuller, Ricketts, hue, Johnson,
Shelton, Stephenson, sawyers and any other you
wish to imagine (note these are just names and
does not at all reflect the choice of the coach
or indeed the combinations)
Yes,
we can already begin to hear the discussions ..
The
naming of the team, the positions of the players,
the formations and of course the predictions
I
must personally insert that this is good discussion,
the type I like
Hopefully .
Less
time to talk of votes and no confidence issues
and focus on positive things.
Back
to our picture
picture
a huge, and I consciously say huge number of English
supporters ready to send off their team in glory.
Do you see their colours?
I
am sure that we are already feeling the vibes.
And
the next morning ..well lets wait for
that .one thing we know
is that if our players play to their ability many,
many Jamaican fans will walk proudly the next
morning. I must say its a pleasure and privilege
to be competing against England for the first
time.
For
many this could be considered our biggest game,
others will debate that. Lets debate it.
But one thing for sure it will be a wonderful
opportunity for the thousands of reggae Boyz fans
who live in Britain and other European countries
to have the chance to see their team
play. It truly promises to be a memorable occasion.
That
is why I am personally pleased that senator Franklyn
who has responsibility for developing relations
with the Diaspora readily agreed to bring greetings
here today as I am sure he fully understands the
significance and even more the opportunities.
We
consciously structured the press conference today
to include the British high commission, the Jamaica
tourist board and the ministry of foreign affairs
because we wanted to show a clear signal that
we not only see it as a ninety minute encounter
but also as an opportunity to strengthen already
existing alliances.
We
also are confident that just the announcement
of the agreement will open other doors for other
international friendlies.
We
are confident that our team will treasure the
opportunity that will be given to them not only
to be amongst the first to play at the new Wembley
stadium but many will be playing against their
own personal stars.
This
match now confirmed represents just one of a number
of targeted matches the federation will be pursuing
this year to be played at home and away.
I
encourage our players especially those in our
domestic league as we are just half way through
the Wray & nephew national premier league,
the door is cracked even further open. All eyes
are on you, see the opportunities that await.
Our
experience over the past two years have taught
us that skill and talent is important but we are
also looking for commitment to country. I repeat
we are also looking for commitment to country.
Finally
ladies and gentlemen, let me use the opportunity
to say that funds raised from the game will be
re-invested in the development of the sport and
will help to propel the national youth development
programme. To all present I say thanks for coming.
A special thanks to minister of state Franklyn
and his Excellency Jeremy Cresswell and Mr. Shields.
Please be assured you will be hearing more as
we prepare for this match and others.
Thank
you

Fitzroy
Simpson Retires from Professional Football
Jan. 1, 2006
Former Reggae Boy Fitzroy Simpson has retired
from professional football after a career spanning
17 years. Simpson was also a key member of Jamaica's
Reggae Boyz team which competed in the 1998 World
Cup finals in France. The 35-year-old Simpson
signed with Manchester City from Swindon Town
in March 1992 for £550,000, and was seen
as a fearless midfield warrior, becoming an instant
hit with the Blues' fans. After making 67 senior
appearances for Manchester City, Simpson was transferred
to Portsmouth where he spent four years and during
this time he was called to the Jamaican national
team. As a member of the Reggae Boyz, he traveled
to France in 1998 and played against Argentina,
Croatia and Japan.
Upon
leaving Portsmouth, he played for Scottish club
Hearts, then Walsall, who he helped gain promotion,
Telford Town and then to Irish Premier League
club Linfield. Simpson also traveled to Spain
where he coached Charlton Athletic's European
soccer school and made a number of appearances
in the Spanish Third Division before deciding
to call it quits as a professional player. He
is quick to say that the highlight of his career
was getting to the World Cup finals with the Reggae
Boyz and the three years spent at Manchester City.
