Reggae
Boyz stop Venezuela
April 29
Jamaica emerged 2-1 winners over Venezuela in
their friendly international football match at
the National Stadium last night. New Reggae Boyz
striker Marlon King, scored a debut goal in the
10th minute and Andy Williams unleashed a screamer
just before half time to give Jamaica the win.
Both goals were assisted by Ricardo Fuller. Venezula's
lone goal was scored by Juan Orango in the 27th
minute as his 30 yards shot was misjudged by out-of-position
Donovan Ricketts. There were a number of incidents
between the players as the game was poorly handled
by Barbadian referee, Noel Ford. The win serves
a morale booster for the Reggae Boyz upcoming
world cup qualifer on June 12 against Haiti.

Game
1: Reggae Boyz 0 vs Fortuna Duesseldorf 1
Reggae Boyz seemed to suffer from jet lag after
the 15 hours journey and arriving 19 hours before
their first kick-off. Temperature was a cold 5
degrees celius and raining. Fortuna played a well
orginized defense and have one strong guy in the
offense. Reggae Boyz had 80% ball possession during
the match, but no big chance until the last 5
minutes. Fortuna scored in the middle of the second
half and held off the young Boyz for the win.
The young Reggae Boyz Team: R. Thompson - J. Taylor,
Findlayson, Howard, Wolfe, Priestly, Myton, Shelton,
West, Austin, Reid. Subs in the second half: in:
Bernard, D. Thompson, Wong - out: Findlayson,
Howard, Myton
Game
2: Reggae Boyz 1 vs Borussia Dortmund 1
Dortmund is twice as strong as Fortuna and much
more experienced as a team. It was starting to
rain at kick-off and just as cold as the previous
day. The Boyz find their way through a strong
Dortmund midfield and Priestly scored. The game
had lots of little fouls on both sides, but the
referee only uses his whistle to give Dortmund
the ball. He was really home-blinded at all. Dortmund
equalized from a free kick from 18 meters as there
was some confusion in Boyz-defense. Team: Robinson
- J. Taylor, Howard, Wolfe, Priestly, Myton, Shelton,
West, Austin, Reid (11th is missing, Moodie).
Subs - in: Findlayson, Spence, D. Thompson - out:
Priestly, Myton, West
Game
3: Reggae Boyz 1 vs Bayern Munich 0
Because Fortuna beat Dortmund surprisingly 1-0
on saturday afternoon, Fortuna was No.1 in the
3-teams-group. Dormund and the Boyz were equal
with points and goals. Boyz defense hold strong
and survive15 corner-kicks, no chances for the
Bayern-offense gettin through the Boyz-defense
within the game. Two of the corners were followed
by a good header flying nearby the Boyz-goal,
but everything else was in Thompsons safe hands.
On the other side a big chance for Priestly in
a one-on-one situation with the Bayern-keeper
and an offside-goal. The referee give Bayern again
a few more chances with his little whistle, but
this time this doesn«t matter anyway. Team: R.
Thompson - Bernard, J. Taylor, Howard, Wolfe,
Priestly, Shelton, West, Wong, Austin, Reid. Subs
- in: Spence, D. Thompson - out: Howard, Shelton
(i couldn«t see a third sub?)
Game
4. Reggae Boyz 3- Bayer 04 Leverkusen 4 (penalty
kicks)
Bayer 04 won the cup last year, so this was a
tough rival in reaching the semi-final. The game
started fast and very competetive with the Boyz
on the defensive. With very fast players at the
right and the left wing Bayer 04 put a lot of
pressure on the Boyz. With some, lets say "unlucky"
tacklings (not unfair, cause they always hit the
ball) the Boyz the game was getting rough. One
player of Bayer 04 had to be exchanged cause of
a hit by in the box. The referees decission: a
indirect free-kick from 12m distance. Some minutes
later again a rough tackle by a Reggae Boyz made
the Bayer 04-bench go wild. "You destroy our players."
was one of the nice sentences - spoken in english
by a Bayer-offical. They had some in german, too,
but i won«t translate this ones here. Besides
this trash talking the game was realy exciting,
in the second half the Boyz were gettin more offensive
and worked out some good chances. Shots from both
teams just missed the goals. Finally the penalty
shootout to decide and the Bayer-team was the
lucky one, the keeper made a good save on the
last one. Team: Robinson - Bernard, J. Taylor,
Howard, Wolfe, Priestly, Shelton, West, Wong,
Austin, Reid. Subs - in: Moodie, Myton, R. Taylor
- out: Howard, Wolfe, Wong. Penalty-kickers: Priestly,
Shelton, West, Austin and Reid, who was the unlucky
one. read

Football Union (CFU) marketing division at the
Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston, the vice president
of FIFA, Austin "Jack" Warner said that in his

areas in marketing of Caribbean football including

profits is to be used to put in place an under-14

Mexico
stops Jamaica U23 in Olympic Qualifying
Feb 5
Report
by Lincoln
4 goals from Mexico erased any hopes for the Jamaican
U23 football team in their regional Olympic qualifying
in Mexico. The first goal came by way of a penalty.
The second goal was the normal mental lapse exhibited
by Jamaican players ....Mexicans played a quick
one two .One of the central defenders was caught
flat footed McCullum came out to cut down the
angle. The Mexican blasted a shot on the underside
of the crossbar. A Jamaican defender tried to
clear it off the line and the advancing Mexican
attacker kicks it in the roof. 3rd goal was a
mess. The keeper rolled the ball to the right
back at the six yard box. The ball was just played
up the flank by a player exhibiting as much energy
as if he was just waking up. Ball intercepted
....was in the back of the net in seconds. McCullum
did not stand a chance!!! more

Costa
Rica Defeats U23 In Olympic Qualifer
Feb
3
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP):
ROY
MYRIE scored two quick goals midway through the
second half to ignite Costa Rica to a 3-0 victory
over Jamaica yesterday in the opening of regional
Olympic qualifying. Mexico was playing Trinidad
and Tobago in the other game of the night at Jalisco
Stadium in Mexico's second-largest city. A stumble
by Jamaica's Simeon Howell left Myrie unguarded
about 15 metres (yards) out from the Jamaican
goal and he knocked a shot past goalkeeper Richard
McCallum 68 minutes into the game. Five minutes
later, against a deteriorating Jamaican defence,
Myrie scored off a pass inside the goal box. After
a sloppy, foul-plagued start, both Costa Rica
and Jamaica started to mount threats around half
time - but the Central Americans steadily asserted
dominance. Costa Rica began to find routes through
Jamaica's defensive wall - paths that began to
look like highways as the Caribbean team seemed
to tire at the same time it shifted to a more
offensive style in an effort to catch up. Costa
Rica scored a final goal in stoppage time as Alvaro
Saborio fired a shot that bounced off McCallum
to Leonardo Araya, who blasted the ball home.
It could have been worse for Jamaica. McCallum
repeatedly made diving, leaping saves and was
fortunate at 63 minutes when the ball bounced
around the goal box between attackers and defenders
before it was finally cleared. Only two of the
eight teams in the tournament for the North and
Central American and Caribbean region will advance
to the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Today in suburban
Zapopan, the United States starts play against
Panama while Canada meets Honduras. LINEUPS: JAMAICA:
Richard McCallum, Roland Dean, Christopher Harvey,
Garfield Reid, Desmon Breakenridge (Christopher
Nicholas 70), Tyron Sawyers, Bradley Thomas, Shaver
Thomas, Simeon Howell, Omar Daley (Keith Kelly
59) and Nicholas Addlery (Demar Phillips 75).
COSTA RICA: Adrian De Lemos, Pablo Salazar, Michael
Umana, Jose Luis Lopez, Pablo Brenes, Jose Villalobos,
Junior Diaz (Leonardo Araya 89), Carlos Hernandez
(Warren Granados 62), Alvaro Saborio, Roy Myrie
and Winston Parks (Erick Scott 45). REFEREE: Neal

U-23 vs FIU
1/24/04
Game Report by Princess
It was a spirited Jamaican based FIU student crowd
cheered on the U23s in a very friendly/practice
at the Golden Panthers' soccer field. A rapid
succession of goals in the first 15 minutes of
the game saw the obviously unfit home team down
by 3 goals. With Kelly's swift passes and Dean's
fancy footwork the Athens-bound U23 team had the
mostly Jamaican students on their feet to chants
of Ele's 'Down the Flank'. With numerous subs
the home team seemed to take most of the first
45 minutes to warm up. However, once the coach
seemed to find the right pieces to his puzzled
team they upped the tempo. The Boyz could have
almost seen their 3 goal lead vanish with FIU
missing several sitters. Not to become undone
infront of a home crowd FIU faught hard and long
to keep the count at 3. It was an uphill task
trying to penetrate the visitor's midfield. Building
from the back and stringing numerous passes the
Jamaicans had their hosts falling like dominoes.
Trini-based striker Adderley seemed to take a
few minutes to get into the game and should have
been taking more shots. The unusually quiet coach
team duo of Cargill and Brown on a few occassions
gave instructions to the Boyz. more

Fuller
being targeted in Britain
PRESTON, England, CMC:
Jan. 1-2004
THE MANAGER of English First Division club Preston
North End has confirmed for the first time that
several scouts in Britain are targeting his exciting
Jamaican striker Ricardo Fuller. With 14 goals
so far, Fuller is by far PNE's top scorer in the
league this season and team manager Craig Brown
does not want to lose him. In a PNE web-site story
yesterday, Brown said nobody has yet made their
intentions clear and accepting an offer to transfer
Fuller would be a "worst case scenario". "I know
that there is interest because people are coming
to watch him or they are coming to watch us and
he is obviously impressing them. I am hoping that
Ricardo can fulfill his ambitions with Preston
North End," Brown said. Before moving to PNE,
Fuller had created waves in Scotland where he
played for Hearts. In his latest outstanding display,
the tall 24-year-old striker pumped in three goals
for PNE as they fought off Burnley 5-3 in a pre-Christmas
match. "Hopefully he will continue to play well
and hopefully we will keep our player, but you
can never predict what will happen," said Brown.
