REGGAEBOYZ LOOSE 1-2 TO TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
May 18
Jamaica squandered a 1-0 first half lead losing 1-2 to Trinidad
and Tobago in their Copa Caribe 2001 clash at the Hasley Crawford
Stadium last night. Striker, Wolde Harris, gave Jamaica a 15th
minute lead but T&T came back in the second half with goals
from Angus Eve and Brent Rahim to give them six points from two
games and the lead in the four-team group. In the opening game,
Martinique overpowred Barbados 3-1. In a game that was frequently
interupted by the ref's whistle, the Reggae Boyz looked the better
team in the first half, but were suspect in the back and were
very slow in their attack. Jamaica's only goal came when Marshall
played the ball to Andy Williams who collided with charging goalkeeper
Ince. As both Ince and Williams collided and fell, , Harris put
it in the net with his left foot from outside the penalty area.
On the half hour mark, The reggae Boyz had a glorious opportunity
to increase the lead when Daley and Williams broke free, but Daley
blasted a right-footed shot over the top. Trinidad got the equalizer
in the 63rd minute when the Jamaican defence seemed confused by
a long, high ball, which was allowed to bounce a number of times
giving Angus Eve a chance to slot it home. T&T took control
putting Ricketts to work in keeping them from scoring. Shortly
after Ancil Elcock out paced Marco McDonald on the right side
and crossed to the centre for Rahim to score. Technical director,
Clovis de Oliveira, again praised the poor performance of his
players but said that T&T deserved to win the game as we are
having with injuries and some of our players not being available
for the tournament. "Our strikers are not a hundred per cent,
Wolde with his hamstring, and Hayles is still recovering from
his recent ankle injury. Trinidad and Tobago deserved to win the
game because they were more aggressive," he said. "We lost this
battle but not the war," he said. Jamaica, who are joint second
with Martinique on three points from two games, face Barbados
tomorrow, while Trinidad and Tobago will play Martinique. Teams:
Jamaica -- Ricketts, Shavar Thomas, Claude Davis, McDonald (Shane
Crawford 88th), Marshall, Daley (Jermaine Johnson 73rd), Jamie
Lawrence, Williams, Whitmore, Harris and Hayles (Fabian Taylor
63rd). Trinidad -- Ince, Rahim, Elcock, Dennis Lawrence, Avery
John, Marvin Andrews, Dale Saunders (Reynold Carrington 82nd),
Eve (Gary Glasgow 66th), Dwarika and Stern John. More
