SOME
PLAYERS YET TO RESPOND TO GOLD CUP INVITATION.
June 30
As
Jamaica prepares for the THE CONCACAF Gold Cup
tournament which begins in two weeks, a few of
the English-based players have not responded to
invitations that was extended to them by the JFF.
The players, Micah Hyde, Paul Hall and Kevin Lisbie
are expected to play important roles in the upcoming
tournament. According to reports published by
the Jamaica Observer "Hyde, a midfielder
with Division One side, Watford, and Hall, a leading
striker with Division Two outfit, Rushden and
Diamonds, have not responded to invitations issued
by technical director, Carl Brown some two weeks
ago. Also Charlton Athletic's striker, Lisbie,
according to unofficial reports, got married recently,
is being persuaded by club officials not to represent
Jamaica at the Gold Cup tournament". Brown
and staff are optimistic that the players will
show up for the tournament scheduled for July
12 to 27 to be held at three venues, Miami and
Boston in the USA, and Mexico City, Mexico. The
foreign based players invited include: forwards
Darren Byfield (Rotherham FC/ENG D1), Paul Hall
(Rushden & Diamonds/ENG D3), Kevin Lisbie (Charlton
Athletic/ENG); midfielders Micah Hyde (Watford
FC/ENG D1), Keith Kelly (R A E C Mons/BEL), James
Lawrence (Walsall/ENG D1), Richard Langley (Queens
Park Rangers/ENG D2), Andrew Williams (Chicago
Fire/USA); and defenders Michael Johnson (Birmingham
City FC/ENG), Tyrone Marshall (Los Angeles Galaxy/USA),

hoping that all the players will be available
for preparation friendlies against Cuba on July

VICTORIOUS OVER NIGERIA
May 26
Jamaica's ReggaeBoyz recorded their first win
over Nigeria with a 3-2 win at the National Stadium
last night. Goals from Rushden & Diamonds striker,
Onandi Lowe, Bolton Wanderers' Jermaine Johnson
and Chicago Fire's midfielder, Andy Williams were
too much for the Super Eagles who fought back
with goals by Uche Ugochekwu and skipper, Nwankwo
Kanu. Technical director, Carl Brown said he was
happy with the result as Jamaica really needed
the momentum going into the Gold Cup. Nigeria
had the better of the early exchanges and came
close to scoring on a few occasions. 25 minutes
into the game, Onandi Lowe opened the scoring
after receiving a pass from skipper, Theodore
Whitmore, the turned his marker, moved around
another and shot home from just inside the penalty
area sending the Jamaican supporters wild. The
Boyz struck again five minutes before the interval
when Johnson picked up a ball from Andy Williams,
faked his marker and then scored to give Jamaica
a 2-0 half-time lead. In the 66 minute Nigeria
hit back through Ugochekwu who outpaced both Claude
Davis and McDonald and calmly put the ball past
substitute goalkeeper, Aaron Lawrence. 11 minutes
later Kanu showed his brilliance after he controlled
the ball, surrounded by defenders, calmly turned
180 degrees and scored the equalizer. Jamaica
took advantage of added time when in the 93rd
minute Williams, picked up a pass from Frank Sinclair
and blasted Jamaica to victory. Jamaica-- Donovan
Ricketts (Lawrence 46th), Claude Davis, Marco
McDonald, Gerald Neil (Frank Sinclair 76th), Michael
Johnson, Micah Hyde, Jermaine Johnson (Omar Daley
71st), Ricardo Gardner, Theodore Whitmore (Damion
Stewart 71st), Andrew Williams and Onandi Lowe.
Nigeria -- Sunday Rotimi, Efetobe Sodje, Ifeanyi
Ekwueme, Bob Usim, Ogbonna Kanu, Garuba lawal,
Bina Ajuwa (Mobi Operaku 94th), Tony Alagbe, Nwankwo

LOSE TO BIRMINGHAM CITY
May 15,
Jamaica's Reggae Boyz lost 1-2 in their friendly
international against Birmingham City at St Andrews
last night. Approximately 10,000 spectators saw
Bryan Hughes score twice on the Jamaican team
with the Boyz lone goal coming from second-half
substitute, Kevin Lisbie. According to reports,
technical director Carl Brown said "We did play
well, but at this level you have to put away the
chances that you create. It is very difficult
to create four, five chances in a game like this
and score only one, we have to at least put away
two or three of these chances," he added (The
Jamaica Observer). The game was a testimonial
for 10-year veteran goalkeeper, Ian Bennett. The
teams were Jamaica:Aaron Lawrence, Claude Davis,
(Oneil Dunn, 74th), Marco McDonald, Damion Stewart,
Michael Johnson (Robert Scarlett, 46th), Omar
Daley, Michael Hyde (Cornel Chin-Sue, 65th), Theodore
Whitmore (Wolry Wolfe, 60th), Jermaine Johnson,
Fabian Taylor, Darren Byfield (Kevin Lisbie, 46th).

Daish, 81st), Jamie Clapham (Mark Ward, 86th),

Sluggish
South Africa held by Jamaica
CAPE TOWN, April 30 (AFP) © 2003 AFP
Unimpressive South Africa were held 0-0 by dogged
Jamaica in a friendly international here on Wednesday.
The match came 24 hours after South Africa officially
launched their bid to host the 2010 World Cup,
which has been reserved for Africa with Egypt,
Libya, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia the other
contenders. It was a friendly Bafana Bafana (The
Boys) were expected to win despite lacking several
first choice players, including injured Manchester
United midfielder Quinton Fortune. But a near-capacity
crowd at the 25,000-seat Athlone Stadium in the
south west city saw the Reggae Boyz hold their
own with Claude Davis an impressive defensive
marshal. The visitors from Caribbean came closest
to scoring in the opening half as Brian Baloyi
produced a superb reflex save to push away a Jermaine
Johnson drive that took a wicked deflection. No
one illustrated the fighting spirit of the Boyz
more than Johnson who, apart from being a persistent
threat to the Bafana defence, often took the law
into his hands. Zimbabwe referee Joseph Musasa
ran out of patience after 58 minutes and cautioned
Johnson from English Premiership strugglers Bolton
Wanderers for grabbing midfielder Sibusiso Zuma
around the neck. South Africa conceded possession
far too cheaply and leading domestic scorer Lesley
Manyathela once again disappointed on the international
stage, wasting a good opportunity before half-time.
As a Zuma free kick flew invitingly across the
Jamaican penalty area, the unmarked South African
was perfectly positioned to score at the far post,
but poor control resulted in his stab at the ball
flying over. Stanton Fredericks fired wide after
an intricate Bafana move midway through the second
half and, when the midfielder was on target soon
after, his timid effort barely troubled goalkeeper
Donovan Ricketts. In their next friendly linked
to the World Cup bid, South Africa face 2002 World
Cup quarter-finalists England on May 22 at Absa
Park in the Indian Ocean city of Durban.

FALLS 2-1 TO THE USA
Feb
13
The United States registered a 2-1 win over Jamaica's
Reggae Boyz in front of a capacity crowd last
night at the National Stadium. Supporters were
disappointed at the lazy and sloppy play displayed
by The Reggae Boyz, as they were outplayed and
outfoxed by a young and inexperienced US team.
The USA went ahead in the 11 minute with a header
by defender, Carlos Bocanegra, from a Nicholas
Garcia left-sided corner. Barely two minutes later
striker, Christopher Klein, buried Jamaica further
when he received a beautiful pass from midfield
that beat the entire defense, and powered a right-footer
past goalkeeper, Aaron Lawrence, to go 2-0 by
half time. In the 51st minute Jamaica was awarded
a controversial 35-yard freekick which Onandi
Lowe blasted home. Technical director Carl Brown,
could not seem to put the right combination of
players needed to penetrate the efficient USA
team, and left many supporters wondering if he
is the man for the job.
